Middle Years Curriculum (11-15)

We recognize the middle years (ages 11 to 16, or Grades 6–10) as a critical time of growth, self-discovery, and academic development. Our Middle Years Programme is designed to challenge students intellectually, foster independent thinking, and prepare them for the demands of senior school and beyond.
Learning

Following a broad and balanced curriculum, our programme integrates international best practices with the rich cultural and environmental context of The Bahamas. Students are encouraged to develop a global perspective, engage in experiential learning, and build the skills necessary for success in higher education and the modern world.

A Rigorous & Engaging Curriculum

Our Middle Years Programme provides students with a well-rounded education, ensuring they build strong academic foundations while also developing skills in creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The curriculum is structured around key academic disciplines:

  • English Language & Literature – Strengthening reading, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Humanities (Geography, History, Citizenship) – Understanding the past and present to make informed global connections.
  • Mathematics, ICT & Business – Developing problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning and technological skills.
  • Sciences – Exploring Biology, Chemistry, and Physics through hands-on experiments.
  • Modern Languages (Spanish & French) – Encouraging multilingual communication and cultural awareness.
  • Creative Arts (Music, Drama & Visual Arts) – Inspiring artistic expression and appreciation.
  • Physical Education & Health – Promoting lifelong wellness and teamwork.

Our teaching approach emphasizes inquiry-based learning, where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore concepts deeply, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

Beyond the Classroom: Leadership & Personal Growth

Middle school is not just about academics—it is a time for students to discover their passions, develop leadership skills, and grow as individuals. Our programme includes:

  • Service Learning – Engaging in meaningful community service projects.
  • Student Government & Leadership Opportunities – Encouraging students to take on leadership roles.
  • Athletics, Arts and Co-Curricular Activities – Offering competitive sports, creative clubs, and personal development programs.
  • Outdoor Education & Adventure Learning – The Governor General’s Youth Award (GGYA) promotes teamwork, resilience, and environmental awareness.

By participating in these activities, students develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of purpose, preparing them for the transition to senior school.

Preparing for Senior School & Beyond

The Middle Years Programme at St. Andrew’s serves as a strong foundation for students as they move into Grades 11 and 12, where they will engage in academic pathways such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (IBDP) or other specialized courses.

Our goal is to ensure that every student graduates from middle school with:
✔ A strong academic foundation
Critical thinking and research skills
✔ A global mindset and cultural awareness
✔ The ability to work independently and collaboratively
✔ A passion for lifelong learning

“For us, the IGCSE and IB that St Andrew’s offers as an academic programme was very important.”
