GGYA at St Andrew’s – Last Semester Highlights

Last semester was an exciting one for the Governor General’s Youth Award (GGYA) at St Andrew’s. After restarting the programme last year, student participation has grown significantly, with numbers for Adventurous Expeditions almost ...tripling from 9 to 30 students.

Participants made an excellent start, attending weekly meetings and progressing through their Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections. In December, 24 students took part in a camping experience where they received CPR and AED training from Nurse Bridgewater and completed team-building challenges, including a nighttime navigation scavenger hunt.

Our senior students in Grades 11 and 12 also completed practice and qualifying expeditions, including our first-ever merged expedition with another school. Congratulations to Connor Kemp (Grade 12), the first St Andrew’s student this year to complete the Adventurous Journey section of his Bronze GGYA.

We now look ahead to our younger students’ practice expedition in January and their qualifying expedition in Eleuthera in March—an exciting next chapter for GGYA at St Andrew’s!

Amelia Rolle: Making a Difference Through Service
Our Primary Student of the Year nominee, Amelia Rolle, was busy spreading Christmas cheer beyond our shores. After winning several toys at her church’s hoopla during the holidays, Amelia began thinking about where she could donate them. She ...soon realised she could send them to Jamaica. Earlier this year, Amelia had already been involved in Hurricane Melissa relief efforts through our K Kids Club, and this felt like a meaningful way to continue helping. She sent a short video message to family and friends asking if they would like to donate toys or money. In less than 24 hours, Amelia collected over 100 toys, filling a large duffle bag to the brim. Amelia personally hand-labelled each toy with a “Merry Christmas” message and used donated funds to shop for even more gifts.

We were incredibly proud of Amelia’s compassion, initiative, and commitment to service. She was a wonderful example of how one small idea could grow into something that brought joy to many
