Primary Curriculum (5-10)

At St Andrew’s International School in Nassau, Bahamas, we are dedicated to providing a holistic and internationally recognized education for our students. As the first school in The Bahamas authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) since July 2002, we have a longstanding commitment to fostering academic excellence and personal growth in our students.
Learning

What is the PYP?

The PYP is an educational framework designed for young learners aged 3 to 12, focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and beyond. It emphasizes inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to explore and engage with significant concepts, ideas, and issues. The programme integrates various subject areas, promoting a transdisciplinary approach that reflects the interconnectedness of knowledge in the real world.

Our Implementation of the PYP

At St Andrew’s, the PYP is implemented from Pre-Kindergarten 2 (PK2) through Grade 5. Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant, meeting the diverse needs of our student body. We utilize the PYP Scope and Sequence documents alongside the Common Core State Standards to create a comprehensive and balanced programme of study.

“One of the first things we noticed was how much more challenging the St Andrew’s Primary Years Programme was, compared to the previous school.”

Specialist Subjects in Primary

Students benefit from engaging weekly lessons with dedicated specialist teachers in Spanish, Music and Performing Arts, Visual Art, Physical Education , Library, and Ecological and Environmental Education. Delivered by experts, these dynamic classes are designed to complement and enrich the themes and units explored in the regular classroom setting, fostering a holistic learning experience.

Through these specialist lessons, students not only develop essential skills but also cultivate their creativity, teamwork, and a love for lifelong learning.

Key Features of the PYP at St. Andrew’s

Inquiry-Based Learning

Our students are encouraged to be active participants in their learning journey, fostering curiosity and a love for learning. Through inquiry, they develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling them to make meaningful connections across various disciplines.

Transdisciplinary Themes

The PYP curriculum is organized around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, allowing students to explore human commonalities and the complexities of the world. These themes provide a framework for students to inquire into and understand the world around them.

Holistic Development

We focus on the development of the whole child, emphasizing not only academic growth but also social, emotional, and physical well-being. Our aim is to nurture compassionate and responsible global citizens.

Student-Centered Approach

Our teaching strategies are tailored to meet the individual needs and learning styles of each student. We provide opportunities for both independent and collaborative learning, fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.

Integration of Technology

Digital literacy is an integral part of our curriculum. We incorporate technology to enhance learning experiences, preparing our students for the evolving digital world.

Assessment for Learning

We employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress. These assessments are designed to provide meaningful feedback, guiding students in their learning journey and helping them achieve their full potential.

The PYP Exhibition

A highlight of the PYP at St. Andrew’s is the PYP Exhibition, a culminating project for Grade 5 students. This event allows students to demonstrate their learning by engaging in a collaborative inquiry into a real-world issue. The exhibition reflects the students’ abilities to apply their knowledge, skills, and attitudes developed throughout the PYP, showcasing their readiness for the next stage of their education.

Our Commitment to Excellence

As an IB World School, St. Andrew’s is committed to upholding the high standards set by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Our experienced and dedicated faculty members are continuously engaged in professional development to stay abreast of best practices in education. We strive to create a learning environment that is both nurturing and challenging, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for future academic endeavors and life beyond the classroom.
